This mother of 3 wanted to enhance her breasts to complement her figure. Dr. Rios performed breast augmentation using incisions in the breast crease and round saline implants placed beneath her chest muscles. See more patients.
It's common to attribute our concern about the way we look to the influence of today's media. You have several choices to make when planning your breast enhancement procedure. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Rios can ensure you're teaming with a highly-trained and knowledgeable specialist who will help guide you through the decisions that are best for you.
One key decision for most patients is saline or silicone gel implants? Until recently, silicone implants were restricted in the U.S. to reconstruction or second implant procedures. Now, after fourteen years of in-depth study, the FDA has declared silicone gel implants safe and effective for all women at or over age 22. Women who have been eligible to receive them during the past several years generally report being very pleased. They describe their silicone gel implants, sometimes known as "gummy" implants, as very natural in look and feel.

Hundreds of thousands of women have received saline implants over the years, and they have advantages as well. Chief among them is the sterile saline solution itself. Should an implant leak, the harmless saline solution is absorbed by the body and it's a relatively straightforward operation to replace the implant.
Another aspect of breast augmentation you will be thinking about is the size of your implants. Dr. Rios helps his patients through this important decision with a system based on multiple measurements and evaluation of tissue type and skin tone.
Other choices ahead of you relate to implant shape, surface texture and profile. Dr. Rios takes extra time to ensure his patients are fully educated before proceeding with surgery. He will spend as much time as necessary to explain your options and work with you to arrive at the best choice.
Like any other surgery, breast enlargement creates scars. Dr. Rios favors three incision possibilities: the infra-mammary fold, which is the crease beneath the breast; the trans-axillary, or armpit, site; and the peri-areolar, or edge of the nipple, location. His emphasis on excellent access to the breast with minimal scarring contributes to the best possible outcome for you.

Dr. Rios has perfected breast enhancement techniques that make his augmentation procedures different than those many other doctors perform. His approach to surgery minimizes tissue trauma, meaning you'll experience a faster recovery time and minimal disruption of your everyday life.
After the procedure, you'll find ibuprofen is all you need for discomfort; no special pain medication and no pain pump. You also won't require drains, a post-surgical bra or special massages. And you'll also experience minimal bruising (sometimes none at all). In short, you'll be feeling pretty good and ready to resume most of your normal activities within just a few days of surgery, though strenuous exercise will have to wait three to four weeks.
Breast augmentation entails risks common to any surgical procedure. Dr. Rios will acquaint you with these risks and you'll have ample time to discuss them with him and think them through before committing to surgery.
Breast enhancement procedures occasionally produce results which call for additional surgery. The most common of these is capsular contracture, scar tissue "capsules" that contract around the implant. When this happens, it's possible you may be able to feel the implants inside your skin, see distortion in the mirror, and in rare cases, even experience pain. Most cases of capsular contracture are mild and do not require further surgery, but you should know it's a possibility.
Some people develop excessive scarring as a result of surgery, and unfortunately it's next to impossible to predict if this will happen to you. Dr. Rios can often improve scars with minor office procedures. For a few patients, additional surgery is warranted.
One very important consideration to weigh before proceeding with breast enlargement—it's very possible you will need further surgery during your lifetime to maintain your new shape. It's not unusual for breast implants to rupture, whether they're filled with saline or silicone gel. Saline solution is absorbed by the body and poses no health risk, but the ruptured implant will need to be replaced. Silicone gel implants can also rupture, though the cohesive material holds together and doesn't migrate through the body. In fact, the FDA recommends periodic MRI scans to test for these "silent ruptures." If a silicone gel implant ruptures, it must also be replaced. Finally, with the additional weight of breast implants, you may find you need a breast lift at some point in the future.
Dr. Rios will discuss the possibility of minor and major complications with you during your consultation visits. He wants you to go ahead with the procedure only if you find the risks to be acceptable.
The pre-surgery breast enlargement consultations are all-important.
