I typically believe in the adage, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” In fact, that’s how I felt when I was first taught how to perform the “rapid recovery” surgical technique for breast augmentation. But, as our patients from Naperville to Lombard to Joliet can attest, you can get breast implants and be back at work in a couple of days.
I’ve performed several hundred breast augmentation surgeries since 2003, and the specialized surgical techniques I’ve used in each of those procedures are designed to limit postoperative discomfort and downtime. My approach reduces injury to the tissues surrounding the breasts and the pectoral muscles, which is what causes pain during recovery for some people.
Patient care following breast augmentation at our practice is unconventional for several reasons. Our approach includes:
- No drains: Some surgeons use these tubes which exit the skin to drain fluid from the implant pocket. I have found this unnecessary using my technique.
- No special compression garments: Specialized tight-fitting garments aren’t needed when using rapid recovery techniques.
- No prescription painkillers: You read that right. Over-the-counter medications are all that’s needed to keep you comfortable.
- No significant downtime: Rapid recovery is just that; some of my patients can go out to dinner the night after their surgery and most return to work or other normal activities within 1-3 days.
Even when I first started using these techniques after learning them from one of the pioneers in the rapid recovery approach, I sent patients home with prescription painkillers. As I followed up with these women, however, I learned that they really weren’t needed. My patients can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen.
Still, one of the most common questions I hear during breast augmentation consultations is if a relatively comfortable, reduced downtime recovery is too good to be true.
And each time I assure patients it is good, and it is true.
